Cupping is a treatment used in traditional medicine in several parts of the world, including China and the Middle East. It involves creating suction on the skin using a glass, ceramic, bamboo, or plastic cup. Negative pressure is created in the cup either by applying a flame to the cup to remove oxygen before placing it on the skin or by attaching a suction device to the cup after it is placed on the skin. In “wet cupping” the skin is pierced, and blood flows into the cup. “Dry cupping” doesn’t involve piercing the skin. It is a practice in which the therapist puts special cups on the skin to create suction. This causes the tissue beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell causing increase in blood flow to affected area. Enhanced blood flow under the cups draws impurities and toxins away from the nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination.
Cupping became part of the mainstream conversation during the 2016 Summer Olympics, when swimmer Michael Phelps showed up to compete with round bruises covering his back. Today, it is considered as one of the most popular therapies worldwide in the field of complementary medicine. And although it has soared in popularity recently, cupping has been around for thousands of years and traces its roots to ancient Chinese and Egyptian medicine. Cupping was documented in one of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, Ebers Papyrus, which was written in 1550 BC. Cupping therapy is one of the oldest and most effective method of releasing the toxins from body tissue and organs. It is also known as vacuum cupping, hijama cupping, horn treatment etc.
Throughout history, cupping techniques and styles have often resembled the geographic locations they were practiced in, as well as utilizing a region’s local materials: animal horns, bamboo, ceramic, glass, metal, and plastic have all been used in this practice found in Ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Unani, Korean, Tibetan, and Latin American cultures, all of which have served the purpose of supporting the body’s ability to heal itself.

In North Africa, cupping therapy was first documented on Eber’s papyrus (1550 BCE), where a cup is the Egyptian glyph to reference a physician. In Asia, during the Jin dynasty, Ge Hong (281-341 CE) mentions the use of animal horns as a means of draining fluids from the body. In Arabic and Islamic countries, cups (Hijama) are recommended in the Al-Qanun Fi’l-Tibb, Canon of Medicine (1025CE), to treat menstrual conditions.

Hijama Treatment is a prophetic treatment used to treat various common disorders. Various Hadiths confirms that it is Sunnah of Holy Prophet (PBUH). It was the common procedure done by Prophet (PBUH) and his fellows to treat the wide range of diseases. Numerous narrations are present in Hadith regarding Hijama as an effective approach to treat illnesses.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Prophet Muhamad (PBUH) said “healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper and cauterization of fire” (reported by Al-Bukhari, 10/136)

Anas Ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on night journey (Isra), but they said to me, “O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do cupping” (reported by Ibn Maajah).
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “if there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (Hijama).” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan Ibn Majah).

There are many other Hadiths related to Hijama, but the above mentioned are enough to get an idea about its importance in Islam.

The main mechanism by which Cupping works in treating illnesses is that the blood which comes out contains toxins. As cupping removes toxin containing blood from the circulation, it gives place to fresh and healthy blood to circulate. The blood which is pulled outtakes with it all the disease-causing toxins. Ultimately, you will feel alleviation in the disease symptoms.
It is the most comprehensive course in this field.
