A therapeutic system that deals with the structure of the body, such as bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and all the connected tissues, their relationship with each other, and the effects of their health status on different body systems. Osteopathic medicine focuses on teaching a person on how to avoid a disease by following a healthy behavior and changing lifestyle, many people always turn to Osteopathic specialist to treat back and neck pain, joint pain, or injuries. This medicine is also used for many internal diseases. It is also used as a complementary part of sports medicine for athletes’ injuries. It is medicine specific to the philosophy of the whole person in which doctors or practitioners embrace a way of treating the person completely and not only in relation to his or her complaint. Care is given with helping the body treat itself as they view the human body as one unit or one organ and there is a focus on the mechanics of the body and the relationships of overlapping organs and body organs as well. But there is a particular focus on the skeleton of the body where doctors use manual therapy for muscles and bones with or instead of traditional drug therapy and surgery in order to let the person enjoy a good health.

After serving on the front lines of fighting in the American Civil War as a surgeon, and after losing his three children in intervertebral meninges, Andrew Taylor Still became unconvinced and pessimistic about recent medicine. This was in the middle of the last century when the available treatment was useless in the most cases (even in the level of recent medicine) and surgery was very harsh because of the modernity of using the drug and other reasons. So Still wanted to find a more sympathetic treatment method with the patient and more beneficial. After experiments, Still was sure that manual means alone are remarkably more effective than other methods in the most dealt with conditions.

In 1874, he started using manual methods in treatment, which was called Osteopathy, along with surgery in a very large clinic, and he became known for his successes. Eighteen years later, after proving that these methods are more effective than those available at that time, he established the first school to teach Osteopathy and called it the school of Osteopathy medicine in Kirksville, Missouri state. Treatment and hand scrub are not new as an idea, as well folk medicine in all over the world contains forms of this treatment, but it has remained to treat back problems, not for various pathological conditions as developed by Andrew Still. Andrew Still believed in the body’s self-healing potential, and that blood and nerve sources for all body tissues should be unhindered for these tissues to function properly. If a structural problem, such as muscle strain or curvature of the spine, etc., interferes negatively with blood and nerve transmission, the body’s ability to heal has been negatively affected and the disease occurs. So, he established a method of treating or scrubbing by hand to return any structural deviations back to its normal condition.

Still was the first to provide a mentally reasonably explanation about the importance of the spine for maintaining health as it surrounds by the spinal cord. The spinal cord can be considered as an accessory to the brain controlling all activities of the body, not only muscles, but important vital organs such as kidneys, heart, liver, and lungs, as well as blood vessels and glands. Any interference with nerves passing to and from the brain through the spinal cord must affect the normal functioning of the tissues to which these nerves pass through it or to it.

He emphasized three basic principles of healing: 1. The healthy natural body contains the ability to defend and repair injuries in cases of infection, toxic effects, and accidents. 2. The body is a one unit, when there is an abnormal structural or functional position it negatively affects the other parts. 3. The body can defend or repair as best as possible if its structure is in its dynamic and maximum flexible position.

As a result of the idea that the body contains its own defenses, the disease occurs when these defenses are weakened, and this weakness occurred because the body has become mechanically incorrect. Dr. Still used to look at his patients with the same holistic view, leaving the usual method of treating symptoms without looking for the causes. After asking the patient about everything related to him, what the doctor considered the alternative related to his condition, as we saw in the previous chapters, he used to manually check the connected tissues with his fingers, and he manually checked the internal organs such as the liver and stomach.

This is what Still was studying from the fact that the structure and function (organs) are inextricably linked, this is what he said: the muscular bone system is made up of bones, ligaments, muscles and peritoneum (the layer that exist directly under the skin that consists of bundles of elastic fibrous tissue that envelop different muscles, nerves and organs) is a single structure which when exposed to difference (out of its normal condition) changes can occur in the functions of other parts. Unlike today’s generally accepted ideas, Dr. Still has given a great importance in diagnosing and treatment of peritoneum as for the spine. That was his device: peritoneum is where you look for the causes of the disease, and it is where treatment begins in all diseases.

Osteopathic medicine focuses on teaching a person how to avoid illness through following a healthy behavior and changing lifestyle, many people always resort to an osteopathic specialist to treat back and neck pain, joint pain, or injuries. This medicine is used for many other conditions such as arthritis and allergies, chest crisis, dizziness, menstrual pain, migraines, sciatica, sinusitis, and problems associated with jaw joints. Osteopathy medicine also helps relieve symptoms of discomfort such as in the case of back pain in pregnancy and digestion problems.

Osteopathy medicine is related to the elderly as it reduces the effects of aging factors related to the spine and joints. It is also used as a complementary part of sports medicine for athletes’ injuries. This treatment is also used to facilitate the movement of the body fluids, restore normal tissue functions, and relieve a person of joint pain and any related dysfunction. These procedures have different forms that depend on the patient’s needs, the most famous of which are methods related to moving the joints: it is a method related to moving joints within range in order to restore their normal functions. The counter-stress method: in this method the body position is detected that relieves the pain of the patient. This method involves a combination of movements that the patient reaches with the specialist and is frequently practiced between push, pressure, relaxation and changing positions in general to stimulate the point that provides comfort to the patient.
